Description

Your robot represents many thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of effort. Don't let a dead, low-performing, or weak battery cut even a single match short. Ensure your robot performs at its best, every time, with the BFG!

The BFG is a precision sensor, integrated into a SB120 battery cable assembly, that monitors battery current and voltage to identify discharge rate, current spikes, voltage dips, depth of discharge, and more. These measurements are performed 100 times a second 24 hours a day to provide you with a full picture of your battery's overall health and state of charge. Since the BFG is always connected it knows how hard each battery was used, how it was cared for, and compiles that data into a comprehensive health metric you can instantly view from the onboard OLED display.

Monitor your battery's health Battery load testers only tell part of the story. The BFG watches every charge and discharge, and with the help of its advanced state estimation model, you have a robust, integrated solution to understand your battery's health and capacity at a glance - no load tester required.

Maximize your battery investment All batteries wear out, losing capacity each charge/discharge cycle. Use the BFG to watch your depth-of-discharge during practice. When you see the battery approach 60-70 percent discharged, replace the battery with a freshly charged one. The less you discharge each battery each cycle the more cycles they will last, with deep discharges being especially damaging.

Upgrade to SB120 connectors BFG is the best reason yet to move your team to the SB120 connector ecosystem. High capacity lugs, low resistance wires, less energy waste, and less heat all improve performance. In addition, the BFG lugs are pull-tested and crimped using a true 6-sided die. Bad crimps aren't just match ending, they can cause wires and connectors to dangerously overheat.

Battery state at your fingertips Monitor the state of your battery using the built in OLED screen, or watch it remotely via CAN telemetry. A 24-bit ADC allows BFG to measure with milliamp precision while still able to see 500A spikes in either direction. Each unit is load tested and calibrated, meaning each BFG isn't just precise, it's accurate too.

Comprehensive battery data Statistics are grouped by battery charge/discharge cycle and by robot match. The BFG continuously tracks:

  • Battery voltage and current
  • Minimum voltage (diagnose brownouts)
  • RMS Current (estimate average load during matches)
  • Peak current (max current seen during the last match)
  • Battery capacity (how much energy does full charge store in Ah and Joules)
  • Battery charge (how much energy is left in the battery in Ah and Joules)
  • Effective capacity (how many Ah or Joules are left at the current discharge rate)
  • Battery age (in cycles and days)

FRC Legal The BFG is legal for the 2026 FRC season and qualifies as valid modification to the robot's electrical system under R625.

Regarding robot weigh-in, the BFG is not covered under the allowance in R103 and should be included in the robot's overall weight. Teams and LFIs should add 1.0 oz to the measured robot weight to account for the BFG (BFG assembly weight, minus the lugs, terminals, and 12" 4AWG wire excluded by R103)

Includes

  • BFG with integrated SB120 connector
  • 12" (300mm) 4AWG battery wires
  • 6" (150mm) dual CAN pigtail
  • Fully assembled - just install on your battery

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ROB-70001-BL Battery Fuel Gauge?
The ROB-70001-BL is a precision current and voltage sensor integrated into an SB120 battery cable assembly. It is designed to be semi-permanently mounted to a battery so that it can calculate battery capacity and state-of-charge by continously monitoring battery voltage and current. Discharge rate, voltage dips, and other information are presented on an onboard OLED display and over CAN.
Is the BFG legal for FRC robots?
Yes. The BFG qualifies as a valid modification to the robot's electrical system under rule R625 and is legal for the 2027 FIRST Robotics Competition season.
How much weight does the BFG add at robot weigh-in?
Teams should add 1.0 oz to the measured robot weight. The BFG assembly weight (minus the lugs, terminals, and 12 inches of 4 AWG wire already excluded by R103) must be included. The 1.0 oz basically covers the plastic case and circuit board that wouldn't already be covered by R103.
What current range can the BFG measure?
The BFG measures current from -500 A to +500 A with 24-bit resolution, sampling at 100 Hz. It can capture both high-current spikes and milliamp-level changes.
What data does the BFG track?
It tracks instantaneous voltage and current, minimum voltage, RMS current, peak current, battery capacity (Ah and joules), remaining charge (Ah and joules), effective capacity at the current discharge rate, and battery age in cycles and days.
How is the BFG installed?
The unit ships fully assembled with an integrated SB120 connector, 12-inch 4 AWG battery wires, lugs, and a 6-inch dual CAN pigtail. It is installed by bolting the cable lugs to the battey terminals. A connection to the robot CAN bus is optional, but not required.
Can the BFG be left connected to a battery all season?
Yes. The BFG is designed to remain connected to a battery for the entire season. It draws very low standby current and can be reset and moved to a new battery when the original battery is retired.
Does the BFG require a separate load tester?
No. The BFG continuously monitors every charge and discharge cycle and uses its state estimation model to report battery health and capacity without a separate load test.
What connector and wire does the Blue SB120 version use?
It uses an Anderson SB120 connector (blue) with 12 inches (300 mm) of 4 AWG wire. Note that SB connectors are keyed and different color connectors will not mate.
